Torsion springs are rated in cycles — one open-and-close is one cycle. Builder-grade springs are typically 10,000-cycle parts, which at 4–6 cycles a day means failure in 5–8 years. When one breaks you'll usually hear it: a single loud bang from the garage. The door will suddenly weigh its full 130–350 lbs, and the opener alone can't (and shouldn't) lift it.

Spring sizing is the part of this trade where corner-cutting shows up later. A spring rated for the wrong door weight will 'work' while wearing out the opener and re-breaking early. We size against the actual measured door weight, not just what was on the door before — panels absorb moisture and doors get heavier with age and repainting.

Metal fatigue. Springs are consumable parts rated in open/close cycles, and Texas temperature swings accelerate fatigue at the coil. It almost always breaks in cold snaps or after years of daily use — not because anything was done wrong.
On a two-spring door, both. They were installed together and have identical wear; replacing only one typically means a second service call within months, and a door balanced on mismatched springs wears the opener.
We'd advise against it. A wound torsion spring stores enough energy to cause serious injury, and it's the single most dangerous DIY repair on a house. This is the one job where the service call genuinely pays for itself.
